Who is Ratan Tata?
Ratan Tata, full name Ratan Naval Tata, is an Indian businessman who served as chairman of the Tata Group, a Mumbai-based conglomerate, from 1991 to 2012 and also from 2016-2017. He was educated at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, as a member of a prominent family of Indian industrialists and philanthropists (see Tata family).

When her phones were tapped in 2008 and 2009, her public relations firm, Vaishnavi Corporate Communications, which no longer exists, counted industrialist Mukesh Ambani among its clients.

Ratan Tata had asked the Supreme Court in August 2012 for a copy of the government’s report explaining how the tapes – the controversy that became known as the “Radia tapes” – were leaked.
Ratan Tata’s conversations with Niira Radia were widely publicized in 2010. He then took the government to court, claiming that the release of the tapes violated his right to privacy.
In a landmark decision issued in August 2017, the Supreme Court declared that privacy is a constitutional right. Although the nine judges reached the same conclusion, they did so for different reasons.
The privacy verdict was also a major setback for the government, which had argued that the Constitution does not guarantee individual privacy as an inalienable fundamental right.
Ravi Shankar Prasad, the then-law minister, claimed that judges had agreed that “privacy as a fundamental right is subject to reasonable restrictions.”
