Charles III will be formally proclaimed king at St James’s Palace on Saturday, as flags are lowered in mourning for Queen Elizabeth II, who died on Thursday at the age of 96. According to the BBC, the flags will be flown at half-mast following the meeting of the Accession Council.
The ceremony will be televised for the first time, following the King’s emotional first address on Friday in which he pledged to follow in the footsteps of his “darling mama’s” life of service.
Charles set the tone for his reign by praising his mother’s “unwavering devotion” during her seven-decade reign.
“Queen Elizabeth’s was a life well lived, a promise with destiny kept, and she is most deeply mourned in her passing,” he said, “and that promise of lifelong service I renew to you all today.”
The new king also named his elder son and next heir, Prince William, as the new Prince of Wales in his address, while expressing love for his younger son Harry.

William’s wife Kate takes over the title of Princess of Wales, which was previously held by Charles’ ex-wife, Princess Diana.
Britain has declared a period of mourning until Elizabeth’s state funeral, the date of which has yet to be announced. International leaders are expected to attend the funeral in London.
King Charles III, 73, took over as monarch automatically after the queen died, but an Accession Council ceremony at St James’s Palace is a constitutional requirement to recognize his sovereignty.
What will be he called?
He will be referred to as King Charles III.
That was the new king’s first decision as ruler. He could have chosen any of his four names – Charles Philip Arthur George, for example.
He is not the only one facing a title change. Prince William and his wife Catherine are now known as the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge, respectively, and the king has bestowed the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales on them.
Camilla, Charles’ wife, also gains a new title: Queen Consort (consort is the term used for the monarch’s spouse).
