Chaurchan Festival – Story and Importance | 2022

Today Mithila region of Nepal celebrating a festival called “Chaurchan” where the moon is worshiped. Today devotees show puri, a mithai (sweets ) called parikiya, Kheer, fruits, curd and special clothes to the moon in the evening and after completion of pooja, all the food items is distributed as prashad.

When Chaurchan festival is celebrated

Chaurchan is celebrated on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, worship of Chandra Dev and Ganesh. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month.

It is also celebrated on this day. This year, Chaurchan will be celebrated on Wednesday 31 August 2022. This festival is celebrated in Mithila i.e. Bihar. Chandra Dev is worshiped on this day.

It is said that the person who worships Chandra Dev with Lord Ganesha on the evening of Ganesh Chaturthi. He becomes free from lunar defect. Please tell that on the Chaturthi (Chauth) date, Chauran Pooja is done in the evening. There is a description in the Puranas about the Chaurchan festival that on this day the moon was stained. Therefore it is forbidden to see the moon on this day.

Importance of Chaurchan

The importance of nature related festivals in Mithila has always been very high. While on the one hand, Mithila residents celebrate Chhath festival by worshiping Suryadev. On the other hand, the festival of Chaurchan is considered special for the worship of Chandra Dev. By worshiping Chandra Dev on this day, the person is saved from false stigma.

The devotees celebrate the festival by worshiping the rising moon from their homes. It is believed that people in the Mithila region started celebrating this festival to rid themselves of the curse of Lord Ganesha.

Chauth Chandra Puja Method

On this day, devotees keep themselves engaged in worship by fasting from morning to evening. In the evening we clean the courtyard of the house with cow dung. Then make a circular moon with the help of banana leaf. Now place a variety of sweet dishes like kheer, sweets, gujiya and fruits on it.

In the Chaturthi including Rohini (constellation), facing the west direction, worship the moon with a bright flower. After this, the number of people in the house, the same number of dishes filled with food and keep the vessel of yogurt.

Now put one by one, lifting the curd pot, banana, cucumber etc. in the hands’ Singh: Prasenamavadhisinho jambavata haat. Sukumar Mandistava Hayesha Syamantaka: Stha ‘read this mantra and dedicate it to the moon.

Story of Chaurchan

One day Lord Ganesha was roaming on Kailash with his vehicle mouse. Then suddenly Chandra Dev started laughing at seeing them, Ganesh ji did not understand the reason for his laugh. He asked Chandra Dev why you are laughing. Responding to this, Chandra Dev said that he is laughing after seeing the strange form of Lord Ganesha. He also explained his form.

Ganesh ji got angry at Chandra Dev’s tendency to make fun of him. He cursed Chandra Dev that you are so proud of your appearance that you look very beautiful but from today you become ugly. Anyone who sees you will have a false stigma. He shall be called a criminal even if there is no crime.

Chandra Dev’s pride crushed as soon as he heard the curse. He apologized to Ganesh ji and said that God bless me from this curse. Seeing Chandra Dev repenting, Ganesh ji forgave him. The curse could not be completely withdrawn, so it was said that whoever would see Chandra Dev on Ganesh Chaturthi. He will be falsely accused. To avoid this, the moon is worshiped on the evening of Ganesh Chaturthi in Mithila.
